Message Exchange (MX)
Message Exchange (MX) is an electronic mail transport agent for OpenVMS VAX systems running VMS V5.5 or
later, and OpenVMS Alpha systems running OpenVMS Alpha V6.2 or later.
MX supports the following network transports:
- Internet SMTP over TCP/IP
- SMTP over DECnet or X.25 (X.25 support requires DEC P.S.I. or X.25 resp.)
- UUCP messaging (requires DECUS UUCP; VAX only)
MX also includes a mailing list processor and support for mail-based file servers, with automated handling
of administrative requests and access controls on lists and file servers. L-Soft's LISTSERV mailing list processor for
OpenVMS is also supported.
MX includes support for the following extended SMTP services:
- Delivery Status Notifications (DSNs): RFC 1891, 1892, 1893, 1894
- Remote Message Queue Starting (ETRN): RFC 1985
- Message Size Declaration (SIZE): RFC 1870
- Authentication: RFC 2554
MX also includes several facilities for reducing the impact of "junk" e-mail (also known as "spam") on
your system:
- The REJMAN facility maintains a database of filters based on source addresses, source/destination
address combinations, specific header contents. It also configures heuristic rules for filtering junk mail based on
combinations of headers.
- Domain Name System lookups of host names contained in source addresses can be required.
- The SMTP server can be configured to prevent "relays" of messages, accepting only those messages coming
from or going to one of your local systems.
